Rebellion Is Not Just For Teenagers

If your house is like ours, your mornings have gone through a big change over the last couple of weeks.  School’s back in session, and the lazy days of summer are quickly receding into just a fond memory.  The early morning quiet you enjoyed through the summer is now punctuated with a chorus of grumpy kids getting ready for school, and an impossibly full schedule.  If you allow it to happen, this can be a really depressing time of year.

So don’t let that happen.

Remember when you were 14 and knew so much more about life, love, and philosophy than anyone else? Those were heady days, and our ability to reject virtually any offered advice or criticism was epic. We would grow our hair long or short depending upon what most aggravated our parents, and our music had too many drums played too loudly.  We were in rebellion, and our parents regretted ever having children.

Well, we’ve likely grown out of many of these bad behaviours, but we can still exercise some rebellion.  And we can now direct our rebellion into pursuits that are far more enjoyable than bad clothing or a new tattoo.  While all your friends and neighbors are surrendering to the rigors and pressure of the back to school schedule, you can break out and enjoy life as if you were 14 again.  Plan a weekend getaway to Big Bear!

We just happen to have some rebellion-ready luxurious cabins nestled in Big Bear.  If you want to be really rebellious, add a Friday, Monday, or both to your weekend getaway, so you can make a real vacation out of it.

Every Five Star Big Bear Vacation Rental is a luxurious destination designed specifically to offer a level of comfort and quality design that will have you shedding your pressures as you unwind.  Some of our cabins can accommodate a dozen guests, so you can bring the whole neighborhood if you want.  Or invite the in laws, and have some great family time together.

Browse all our Big Bear properties at this link.  Call us at 310-800-5454 and we’ll be glad to help you plan a great getaway.  Interested in a getaway at one of our other destinations? Browse our properties in  MammothPark CityPalm Springs/La QuintaSouthern California Beaches, or Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.  Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway for rebellious weekend away or a week-long vacation, we’ll be happy to help you find the perfect cabin or estate.

Enjoy an Active Getaway to Big Bear

As the summer draws to a close, many of us are reluctant to abandon all the activities we’ve been enjoying for the past several months. And there’s really no reason to stop enjoying lots of fun activities just because school is starting back up and your schedule is a bit tighter.

The vibrant nature of Big Bear make it a natural draw for sports of all kinds. Throughout the year, you will see snowboarders, cyclists, and runners—just to name a few—visit Big Bear to compete, train, or simply play in the beautiful environment that surrounds them. In the warmer months of summer and spring, water sports dominate the local activities, but in the cold of fall and winter, you get to see the gorgeous snow that entices snowboarders and other cold weather sportsmen!

This is the time of year when the unique beauty of Big Bear truly shines. On September 19th, snowboarders will flock to enjoy it and compete in the 12th Annual Hot Dawgz and Hand Rails competition. Offering an early taste of winter, this event marks the kickoff of snow sports in Big Bear with some manufactured snow. It’s great fun for athletes, locals, and visitors alike. There will be an array of booths set up representing dozens of brands who will hold contests to win merchandise. This will also be your last chance to get the lowest price possible on a season pass for winter 2015-2016. These passes will be available onsite at The Parks at Bear Mountain from 9am to 6pm.

If you are visiting and get the chance to check out the festivities, you won’t regret it, but you don’t have to watch by the sidelines and watch others have all of the fun. You can take advantage of the snow and enjoy some sports of your own! As the winter season gets underway, ski resorts will begin opening their slopes to visitors. Skiing is a great way to exercise, see the best of Big Bear nature, and have a truly unique experience during your vacation. Snowboarding, similarly, is a fun way to enjoy the upcoming winter weather and get a vigorous workout in the process!

Snow sports are hardly the only physical activities Big Bear has to offer. Year-round, you can traverse hiking trails, compete in marathons, or do yoga in the solitude of nature. No matter how you choose to spend your time in Big Bear, nothing is more relaxing than retiring to your luxury vacation rental at the end of the day. You deserve to rest and reward yourself after a long day of activities!

Whatever may be your reason for visiting Big Bear, Five Star Vacation Rentals will be working behind the scenes to make sure your stay with us is filled with luxury, fun, and fond memories.  Give us a call at 310-780-3411, or browse our properties in Big BearMammothPark CityPalm Springs/La QuintaSouthern California Beaches, and Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.  Whether you’re planning a weekend hiking getaway or a week-long summer vacation, we’ll be happy to help you find the perfect Big Bear cabin or estate.

Big Bear Nightlife

Nothing is more fun than losing yourself in some music, swaying to a beat, and enjoying a live performance. Maybe your days of headbanging or disco are over, but chances are you still appreciate the opportunity to go to concerts and see live music. With all of the beautiful nature Big Bear has to offer, events like concerts can sometimes go overlooked, but you won’t regret fitting a show into your visit’s itinerary. Big Bear is home to several wonderful music venues that regularly host acts that are great for the whole family or ideal for a parents’ night out.

If you are looking for a fun, energetic night out, The Cave is the spot for you. In September, you will catch artists like Robby Kreiger’s Jam Kitchen and Y&T at the state-of-the-art venue, and you can enjoy fantastic concessions while you jam out to the evening’s tunes. The Cave is located at 40789 Village Drive, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315, and shows begin at 6:30PM. In addition to the artists who have already been announced, you can expect to see impromptu and last-minute shows from artists traveling through town or staying in Big Bear. The Cave is just one of several spots you are sure to find a show going on.

Part of the allure of venues in Big Bear is their class and quality combined with their intimacy. Though you will often see big-name acts come to town, they will often elect to play for a small crowd in a memorable setting rather than a big arena. While you are enjoying your luxury rental and the sights Big Bear has to offer, venturing to a show and reliving your glory days can be the perfect end to an evening. Concerts are just one of the many arts-focused events going on! On any given day in Big Bear, you can go to a concert, a wine tasting, or a festival.

There are plenty of chances to bring the kids to a concert and stage a family sing-a-long, too! This month, the Big Bear Discovery Center is continuing their Music in the Mountains Summer Concert Series, and kids 12 and under get free admission. The Discovery Center is located at 40971 HWY 38, Fawnskin, Ca 92333, and on September 5th you will see Jim Curry perform A Tribute to John Denver. You can rock out to the classics with your family and see whether or not your kids are old enough to be embarrassed yet! In all seriousness, the whole family will love the intimacy of the outdoor amphitheater, and you’re sure to make memories that will last a lifetime.

How To Make Your Life More Like Your Computer Keyboard

Sometimes unlocking the mysteries of life is as simple as taking a closer look at everyday items around us.  We look at trees, and we see metaphors for strength through strong roots.  Many flowers rise early, follow the light all day, and gently close each night. Even our computer keyboards can offer insights.

On the upper left of most keyboards is the magical, “ESC” key.  As we all know, that’s short for “Escape,” and it’s exactly what makes a Five Star Vacation Rental such a great value.  “Escape” is a powerful concept. In its simplest definition, escape means to seek freedom from some sort of restraint or confinement.  Many of us live lives that are sorely in need of an escape.  We have high-pressure jobs with people relying upon us for one thing or another.  We have commitments and appointments, and sometimes we face one deadline after another. It’s vital for our health and well being that we occasionally seek refuge from this.  Remove the lid from the pressure cooker, and breathe some fresh air. At Five Star Vacation Rentals, that’s what we’re all about.

In the lower left and right corners of most keyboards is the “Ctrl” key, which stands for “Control.”  This is one of the best things about a Five Star Vacation Rental.  Unlike subjecting yourself to the confinement of a hotel, with our vacation rentals, you’re in control.  Feel like eating something in the middle of the night?  No problem.  All our units come with full kitchens.  Just stock them up with your favorites upon your arrival, and you can pull on your robe and slippers for a midnight snack whenever you wish.  Try doing that at a hotel.  Want to bring along the kids, but still have some privacy for the adults?  Give the kids their own bedroom just down the hall, without the bother of strangers walking just outside in the hallway.  Many of our properties have full decks with barbecues as well.  Try grilling a couple of steaks in your room at the hotel, and you’ll soon be facing the wrath of the local fire department.

And at the bottom of every keyboard is the all important space key.   That’s what you may enjoy most about your Five Star Vacation Rental.  Why rent a small room in a hotel, when you can enjoy the space of an entire luxury home for your next getaway?  Surround yourself in a truly luxurious space, so you can enjoy your escape.

Five Star Vacation Rentals specializes in creating luxurious vacations in the most beautiful destinations.  You can browse our properties and book online, or let one of our specialists help you find the perfect getaway destination for your family.  We have great vacation rentals available in Big BearMammothPark CityPalm Springs/La QuintaSouthern California Beaches, and Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.  Whether you’re planning a weekend hiking getaway or a week-long family vacation, we’ll be happy to help you find the perfect location.  Just give us a call at 310-780-3411, and our vacation specialists will help you create an experience that your family will always cherish.

August in Big Bear: Biking, Hiking, Fairing, and Zooing

August in Big Bear is just plain packed with too much to do.  Once you get a look at all the fun we have in store, you’ll be calling us and asking for a monthly rate on your Five Star Vacation Rental cabin or estate.  No kidding, there really is something for everyone all month long.  Here’s just a glimpse at the upcoming events:

We devoted last week’s blog to the upcoming Renaissance Faire.  That will run weekends August 1-2, 8-9, and 15-16.  Follow this link for details. Prepare to have the time of your life.

The 2015 Tour de Big Bear is scheduled for August 1.  There are 25, 50, 70, and 100 mile courses offered, and it’s a great event for the serious cyclist.  Check out this link for the course details, so you can choose the one that best fits your skill and fitness level.  Each course is well marked, and hydration points are available along the way.  It’s a great opportunity to enjoy cycling through the beautiful Big Bear surroundings.

The Big Bear Discovery Center offers weekend nature walks that are always popular with families.  The hikes are easy, and offer frequent stops to learn about the beautiful plants and wildlife that surround us in the Big Bear.  You’ll also gain some great insights into the history of our region.

Plan a visit to the Big Bear Alpine Zoo to enjoy their annual Ice Cream Safari on August 1. As you all know, ice cream goes with virtually anything, and we can think of no better mix than ice cream and wild animals. This annual event is always a big hit, and a chance for the family to take in a yummy treat while enjoying the sights and sounds of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo.

It’s Time to Don Your Metal Pants

We’re just a few weeks away from one of Big Bear’s most popular events.  Yes,  cast out your foolish modern grammar and manners.  It’s time for Big Bear’s annual Renaissance Faire, so pull on your metal pants, chainmail vest, and join us for the weekends of August 1-2, 8-9, and 15-16. You’ll want to make your reservation early, because many of our properties get booked quickly.

This annual event is almost more fun than should be allowed in polite company.  But that’s okay.  Much of the time you may not actually be in polite company.  It’s the one time of the year you get to use words like, “tankard,” “jousting,” and “mirth.” The Renaissance Faire offers a full range of things to do, and offers great entertainment for the entire family.

Our favorite event is the “Imperial Knights.”  These fine folks pull on 130 pounds of steel armour, climb on horses weighing 2000 pounds, and charge at each other with long, pointy lances.  They’ve been known to reach speeds in excess of 30 miles an hour before they collide in the middle.  What could possibly go wrong?

The Passado Action Theater acts out a collection of Shakespearean vignettes filled with bawdy humor, physical comedy and outrageous swordplay. Zaria will also be there. Named in honor of the Slavic goddess of beauty, youth, and sunrise, this troupe is based on a foundation of feminine strength and positive energy. There will be storytellers, pirates, royalty and period craftsman as well. There’s going to a troupe of belly dancers, and you’ll also experience the magic of Ciran the Gypsy Magician.  Wander among the dozens of vendors selling great souvenirs and period crafts.

If this is your first visit, we suggest you arrive hungry, and be prepared to consume some of the most outrageous foods you’ve ever seen.  The rumors are true.  You can actually get an endless supply of roasted turkey legs that clearly come from turkeys the size of an emu.  The ale flows freely, and the cooking aroma in the air is combined with the pleasing sounds of wandering minstrels and occasional shrieks of delight.  Many of our guests keep returning each weekend because it’s just too much fun not to.

Browse our properties in  MammothPark CityPalm Springs/La QuintaSouthern California Beaches, or Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.  Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway for Big Bear’s Renaissance Faire or a week-long summer vacation, we’ll be happy to help you find the perfect cabin or estate.

Welcome our Newest Example of the Good Life!

We are constantly amazed at the amount of effort that goes into creating a true work of luxurious craftsmanship.  Things that come easy are seldom great, and great things never come easy.  Our cabins and estates are a prime example of this adage.  Take a look at our newest property for a great example.

Our #22, Eagle Point Lakefront is just stellar. As you wander up the driveway, you immediately begin to understand that this was created at great expense with an equal amount of work. It presents a striking impression before you even open the front door.  But, the impression continues as you enter.

This estate cabin boasts 5 bedrooms, 5-1/2 baths, and three fireplaces spread over a sprawling 5500 square foot floorplan.  The huge master suite upstairs is furnished with a king size bed and has its own fireplace.  It’s a lakefront property as well, so you can wander out on the back deck and enjoy views of the lake spread out in front of you.  Two additional bedrooms are outfitted with private baths, so this is an ideal destination for larger groups or multiple families.

When you’re not out hiking or enjoying all the summer watersports on the lake, you can relax here with a friendly game of pool or just enjoy some cold drinks in the sunken living room.  It’s a property custom designed to enhance your relaxation, and the only moment you’ll regret choosing to stay here is when you have to pack up to leave.

You can view all of our Big Bear vacation rentals at this link.  Here are links to our other destinations in Park City, and Mammoth Mountain,  Southern California Beaches and Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.  Make sure your next anniversary, birthday, or holiday is one your family will always fondly remember.  We’ll be happy to help that happen, so call us today at 310-800-5454, and we’ll help you plan a great vacation or weekend trip.
