May Events in Big Bear

There are enough May events in Big Bear to keep you busy all month long. It’s a perfect time to plan your Five Star Vacation Rental getaway and here are just a few of the fun things you can enjoy during your stay.

Cropped Biker in ForestSpring relaunches Big Bear’s cycling season, and there are a bunch of events planned all month long. The events start May 1st. with a twilight ride starting from Maggio’s Pizza at 5:30pm. Many consider Big Bear to the cycling capital of Southern California, and the Big Bear Cycling Association is one of the most active cycling groups anywhere in the country. Owing to Big Bear’s natural beauty and varied terrain the association offers a broad spectrum of rides for all skill levels and some planned specifically as family events. ruby slippersBig Bear’s night life is jam packed throughout May with some really great choices sure to delight everyone in the family. For a fun night of comedic relief, and family-friendly slapstick, head over to the Big Bear Performing Arts Center for the Big Bear High School Performing Arts Department’s presentation of a Panto version of “The Wizard of Oddz.” Inspired by the comedic style started in England, this loosely follows Dorothy and her friends trying to get back to Kansas with some very funny changes and audience participation along the way. You’ll want to order tickets in advance for the performances. Runs May 2-3-4 at 7pm and May 4-5 at 2pm.

Music lovers will have their choice of great events in May as well. The Cave continues with its lineup of great bands. May kicks off on Friday the 3rd with a performance by X, one of the most influential punk bands from the past 40 years. The following night will see Anuhea, the Hawaiian songstress bring her unique sound to The Cave. And here’s a list of other acts appearing throughout the month.

Plan Your August Big Bear Getaway

Big Bear’s event calendar is full of great things to keep your entire family occupied and smiling during August. Big Bear Cycling FestivalAugust opens with the continuation of Big Bear Cycling Festival. The festival opens on July 28th and continues through August 5th. This is the only week-long cycling festival in the United States, and it’s an experience that offers events geared for all ages and skill levels. The 8th annual Tour de Big Bear is part of the activities and it takes place on Saturday, August 4th. This has been voted as “Southern California’s Favorite Ride.” This 25 mile ride circles the beauty of Big Bear Lake, and keeps you immersed in the San Bernardino National Forest with a total climb of about 1300 feet that include views of the San Gorgonio mountains.  Experienced riders may want to choose “The Climb” and embark on this challenging 107 mile route with its 9000 foot climb. Telescope watching the wilky wayStar gazers will want to take advantage of Big Bear’s unique night sky at First Friday Under the Stars at Bear Valley Farms on the evening of August 3rd. This is a great opportunity to experience the night sky in a way most city-dwellers never enjoy. Local astronomers will talk about the stars and share their telescopes with attendees. Pack some blankets and chairs, and get ready for a fun and informative evening under the amazing night sky in Big Bear.

You can enjoy screening of “WALL-E” on Saturday August 4th and “A Wrinkle In Time” on Saturday August 11th. Load up the kids and bring some blankets and folding chairs for a relaxing evening on the meadow at the base of Snow Summit. These screenings are a popular event in Big Bear, so you’ll want to plan to arrive early to stake out a good spot. Visit their website for more information on the movies and schedule.

And the Renaissance Faire continues weekends through August 12th. Get dressed up, or just come as you are. Themed weekends this year include Fantasy Weekend July 21-22. July 28-29 is Pirates Weekend, and  August 4th and 5th is Steampunk Weekend. The fun closes out on August 11th and 12th with Royal Weekend. More Fun For Your July Big Bear Getaway

In our blog last week, we looked at some of the fun things you can plan for your July getaway to Big Bear. July is packed with fun stuff, so we’re taking a look at some more of the fun things you can include during your stay.

JoustingOur favorite event is the annual Renaissance Faire running weekends starting July 14th through August 12th. If you’ve never been, it’s a great time with amazing food and many interesting characters. Be sure to watch for the themed weekends, and feel free to join in the fun with your own costumes. This year you’ll have the chance to enjoy fairies, pirates, royalty, and more. And the food is simply amazing. You’ll be able to select from a variety of period foods. Just follow the amazing aromas to see which one you’ll take in.

Cycling raceBig Bear boasts one of the most beautiful venues for cyclists in all of California. The Big Bear Cycling Association is hosting cycling events all month long culminating in the Big Bear Cycling Festival from July 28 through August 5th. This is the only week-long cycle festival in the United States. Events are scheduled in the dirt and the road with offerings geared toward all skill levels. You’ll find altitude acclimation rides, kids events, and a cycling expo displaying the best in cycling gear and technology. There are a number of events scheduled including Crafts N Cranks, which combines your passion for mountain biking, and craft brews with a fun run at Snow Summit, the mountain biking Mecca of Southern California. watching wildlifeYour family can learn more about ecotourism in Big Bear during Big Bear Valley Outdoor Adventure Days on July 29th and 30th. This event takes place at the Big Bear Discovery Center and features nature, history, discovery and more. Visitors will be able to visit a Big Bear wetland area, explore Big Bear Lake on paddle boats, and learn more about Big Bear’s rich Native American history. Nature walks and bird watching tours will also be offered. It’s a great way to enjoy Big Bear and learn about how we can preserve its beauty for future generations.

August in Big Bear

Summer is well under way, and we hope you’ve already made your plans to getaway for a much deserved vacation or weekend in a Five Star Vacation Rental in Big Bear. The Renaissance Faire makes its 16th annual appearance starting on August 5th and continuing every weekend for the entire month. If you’ve never been to this event, you’re in for a real treat. Each weekend carries a different theme ranging from pirates to purple, and fairies to steampunk. The food is amazing, and it’s only place we know of where you can get juicy turkey legs the size of your head. You’ll delight with the sights and smells that surround you as costumed participants stroll amid the many vendors and food booths. There will be magic, sword swallowing, jousting and dancing. Cycling raceAugust is also a big cycling month in Big Bear. The Big Bear Cycling Association has rides scheduled continuously throughout the month. Rides are available for all experience levels and ages. The 8th annual Tour de Big Bear is scheduled for August 5th as part of the Big Bear Cycling Festival starting July 29th. This event offers several different distances, so riders of varying skill can choose the one that best fits their abilities. Choose from the namesake Tour de Big Bear with its 25 mile distance and 1368′ climb to the most difficult being the HC Gran Fondo covering 125 miles and a 12,000′ climb. There are 50, 70, and 107 mile courses to choose from as well. classic retro vintage blue carAugust 11th welcomes the 28th Annual Antique Car Club Fun Run in the Village. This three-day event is one of the biggest of its kind, and 500 cars are expected to participate. This is always a hit with car buffs. There is no admission charge to view these beautifully restored and preserved cars. There’s a small fee if you want to display your car, and this helps fund local Big Bear charities. You may want to join the crowd lining the streets when they embark on the “Cruise Around the Lake.”

More August Events in Big Bear

Most of us are acutely aware that summer is rapidly slipping away from us.  If you haven’t already started, in just a few short weeks you’ll be shopping for school supplies and new clothes for the fall semester.  You’ll be swapping out your summer schedule for the busier one that happens each year when the kids return to school.  There’s still time to make this summer one to remember with some great activities planned for August.

Cycling raceBig Bear has one of Southern California’s most active cycling clubs, and they have a number of scheduled events coming up in August. You can join the Big Bear Cycling Association several days each week for a variety of group rides for the full spectrum of riders.  Some are geared toward experienced competitive riders, but many are intended for guests and tourists to enjoy the beauty of Big Bear by joining other riders on scenic routes.  One of their biggest rides of the year is coming up on Saturday, August 6th. The Tour de Big Bear spans over 100 miles, and covers some of the most beautiful scenery found anywhere in the area.  Shorter distances are available as well.  Visit their website for more information and to sign up: http://tourdebigbearhc.com/.

As we’ve mentioned in our recent blogs, August also sees the arrival of the annual Renaissance Faire with all the great food, fun entertainment, and amazing period performers.  This is one of our most popular events, so you’ll want to book your vacation rental cabin or estate early to make sure you’re all ready for some great jousting over a cup of mead. The Renaissance Faire runs weekends August 6-7, 13-14, 20-21 at Pederson’s Mill in Fawnskin.

Wednesdays enjoy some good old fashioned line dancing at Wyatt’s Saloon at the Convention Center.  Free lessons and music provided by DJ Joe Vonesh.  Doors open at 4pm, and dancing starts at 7pm.

Fridays and Saturdays are Honkey Tonk nights back at Wyatt’s Saloon.  Enjoy live music with some foot-stomping great times.  Doors open at 4pm, and the fun starts at 6pm.

June Events In Big Bear

It’s hard to believe that June is nearly upon us, and the kids will soon be out of school.  If you haven’t already made your plans, don’t delay any longer.  We’ll help you put together a getaway that is sure to have the entire family giggling with delight.

Summer in Big Bear is always amazing, so you’re in for a real delight.  While the temperatures are beginning to soar down in much of Southern California, Big Bear is a cool and crisp alternative.  You’ll want to pack light jackets for your June stay because it can get chilly in the evenings.  But this is really a treat.  Imagine your delight in settling down in front of a crackling fire with the family when just a couple days earlier you were all complaining about the heat at home.

Funny little cars and big creepy clowns. It's the Old Miner's Parade!

Who doesn’t love a parade? Pack up the family, and have some fun at this year’s Old Miners Big Bear Heritage Parade on June 15th. This annual event is a small slice of Americana, and you’re sure to enjoy yourself. So grab some folding chairs, bottled water, and sun block. We’ll see you there.

And our avid cyclists will want to be sure to plan their Big Bear getaway in June. After keeping your bike in storage during the winter, it’s time to dust it off and hit the road again. The Big Bear Cycling Association holds Community Bike Rides every Saturday for riders of all levels. The rides start on June 1st and riders should meet at Copper Q at 645 Pine Knot Blvd by 9am.

Competitive cyclists will want to be sure to book their stay to correspond with the 2013 US Cup Big Bear Shoot Out. This annual event is an important stop on the race circuit. Visit http://www.uscup.net for more details.
