Welcome to 2015. Grab Your Skis!

We had a great time welcoming in the New Year, and we sure hope you did as well.  We did everything in moderation, and woke up with a clear head ready to take in the Rose parade.  New Year’s day was very relaxing, and we’re finally starting to run out of left overs from all the holiday meals.

Like many people, the New Year is always an exciting time for us. We make big resolutions and every year we actually manage to accomplish some of them.  It’s always best to start small, and work your way into the big ones. “Get out of bed, “make breakfast,” and “go to work” are easy and help us feel confident in moving on the larger ones.  Maybe this year we’ll actually get to the really big ones , so we can have the satisfaction of announcing that we’ve established world peace.  And we’ll make the announcement from the top of Mount Everest.  It could happen.

But the easier items on our resolution list are things we really want to do anyway: spend more time with our family and ski more this season.  If your list has a couple of similar resolutions, Five Star Vacation Rentals will gladly help you kill two birds with one stone.

The early storms this season helped create a great base for skiing in Big Bear.  As the storms continue, the condition of the slopes just gets better.  Both Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are making snow in between storms, and it has all the makings of one of the best ski seasons we’ve seen in many years.  There’s really no better reason to grab your skis and reserve a few nights in a luxurious Five Star Vacation Rentals cabin.  Even if you don’t ski, there’s plenty of snow fun in Big Bear including sledding and inner tube slides.

Well, maybe there is one better reason:  spending some quality time with your family.  A ski getaway can be a great opportunity to enjoy the thrill of a great downhill run followed by an evening of laughter with your family in front of a warm fire in your Five Star Vacation Rental cabin.  Each of our cabins is selected for their distinctive luxury features.  There’s good reason why we’ve hosted Hollywood starlets and had our cabins appear in film.  Our cabins are stars in their own right, and you’ll understand that best as you relax in the amazing comfort of the one you choose for your next family ski getaway.

You can view all of our Big Bear vacation rentals at this link.  Here are links to our other ski destinations in Park City, and Mammoth Mountain.  In the mood for a warmer getaway?  Check out our vacation rentals in  Southern California Beaches and Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.  Your family could use some time away to relax and enjoy some time together, couldn’t they?  Call us today at 310-800-5454, and we’ll help you plan a great vacation or weekend trip.

Five Star Vacation Rentals Offers Possum-Free Luxury

By now you all know that we live much of our lives dedicated to creating the absolute best vacations possible for our guests.  We’re proud of the fact that we have a steady stream of repeat guests.  Our properties are among the most luxurious you can find anywhere.  They’re well maintained, furnished with all our guilty pleasures, and situated in some of the most amazing resort destinations in the world.

But sometimes we like to consider the possibilities that often befall those who are foolish enough to seek lodging any place else.  We’ve warned our readers about these pitfalls in previous blogs here and here, but it bears repeating:  Don’t risk your precious vacation time anywhere else.   You may end up losing sleep and having to share your accommodations with furry little animals.  Let us explain.

We had a few quiet minutes in the office the other day, so we decided to Google, “worst vacation ever.”  Oh my, was this a sad search. One of the first hits was a review of a hotel in Myrtle Beach.  The very unhappy patron of this hotel gave the place a one star review and noted among other things that, “the rooms were pitiful. Not clean, dirty sheets . . . Possums in the room.”  Yes, possums.

But wait, there’s more.  One hotel in Miami Beach, Florida is ranked 190th out of 199 hotels in the area.  The description offered by one guest gives us a hint at the quality they found there: “Carpeting is stained and dirty. Towels are old, stained, & dirty. Beds are old, dirty, and stained. Walls are old, dirty, and stained.”  I think we see a pattern emerging here.  Hotel number 191 has even more colorful reviews. Our favorite is titled, “Manager threatened PREGNANT wife with pepper spray!!!” Some are from international travelers.  You don’t need to learn a new language to understand these folks: “Der absolute Horror” and “ORRIBILE!!!!!!!!!”  I think it’s safe to assume that the memories and stories these folks brought home from their vacations were pretty sad.

Now compare their reviews with some of the feedback we receive from our guests. Dana C. wrote of her recent stay, “Everything was awesome. . . Thank you again, Kevin and Maria for the awesome weekend…can’t wait for next year!!” Yes, Dana used “awesome” twice. We really like the sound of that word. Awesome.   And when Tony K dropped us a line about his stay, he had the following to say, “I just wanted to say thank you for an amazing weekend. Every one of your staff that I talked to and met were extremely helpful and friendly; it really made our stay more enjoyable. ”

Better Rustic Motif. Better Furnishings.

We realize that you have many choices when it comes to your next vacation. Each of us has had our share of bad experiences staying in some pretty awful places in our time.  Your time away is precious, and you should not risk it with inferior accommodations. We work hard to make sure that all our vacation rental properties will have you feeling pampered and relaxed. And we guarantee that you’ll never share your luxury estate rental with a possum, and we’ll never chase your pregnant wife with pepper spray.

Be sure to look at our luxury rentals in Big Bear,  Park CityPalm Springs/La QuintaSouthern California BeachesMammoth Mountain, and Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.  We’re committed to making sure your vacation will be a great memory for your entire family.  Call us at 310-780-3411 and we’ll be happy to help you find the perfect place for your next vacation.

April Events in Big Bear

Spring is quickly closing in on us, but we’ve still got plenty of good skiing weather here in Big Bear.  With a couple of late storms, we usually have good skiing conditions lasting into late April.  And there are some great reasons to start planning your April getaway to Big Bear now.

Each year Bear Mountain and Snow Summit invite Law Enforcement, EMS, Firefighters & Active Military to take advantage of Honor Our Heros/Uniform Days.  The last opportunity this season will be on April 3 & 4. Up to a $21 savings!

March Events in Big Bear

There’s snow on the ground now in Big Bear, but as Spring approaches, temperatures begin rising and the cold of winter is replaced with warmer, sunnier days. The comfortable weather of Spring is alluring, but it can mean limited accessibility to some of Big Bear’s snowier attractions. March is the perfect time to take advantage of Big Bear’s snowy landscape before it melts away. There are a multitude of activities in the area for everybody to explore this time of year.

One such activity is Guided Snowshoe Tours offered by the Southern California Mountains Foundation. On this tour, you can traverse through the San Bernardino National Forest with a tour guide and become acquainted with the natural features of Big Bear through snowshoeing. This is a great opportunity for individuals visiting the area who are interested in exploring Big Bear’s natural beauty, as well as for families looking for engaging and educational activities for kids. Discovering the beauty of Big Bear in wintertime is a treat for adults and kids both. For more information, call (909) 382-2790.

Several snowboarding and skiing events and competitions come to Big Bear in March, too. Whether you are interested in participating in or simply watching these events, there are certainly opportunities for interested visitors. The War of Rails is a skiing competition that takes place on March 2nd and is free to attend. For more information, call (909) 866-5766. Visitors can become involved in a good cause when The United States Adaptive Recreation Center (USARC) also hosts their annual Ski-A-Thon on the same day. Participants enroll to snowboard or ski to raise money for USARC. Additional information is available by calling (909) 584-0269.

These and other snowy events make March the ideal time to plan a Big Bear vacation. After a day of fun activities like these, you will love the comfort and luxury of one of our Big Bear Cabins. Call us at (310) 780-3411 to begin planning your trip!

If you’d like to view our Big Bear vacation rental cabins, visit our Big Bear page at this link.  Planning a vacation somewhere else?  We’ve got luxury vacation rentals available in Park CityPalm Springs/La Quinta Southern California BeachesMammoth Mountain, and  Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. We realize that you get very little vacation time each year, so we’re dedicated to ensuring that your time spent in one of our luxury rentals will have you enjoying every possible moment.  Call us today, and we’ll help you plan the vacation of a lifetime.

Pack Your Bags! We’ve Got Five Star Luxury Big Bear Cabins and Great Ski Conditions

The recent storms have finally passed, but they’ve left behind some great ski conditions in the Big Bear area.  If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to pack up for your ski getaway, wait no longer!  Check ahead when you come, but the roads are clear with no chains required, so it’s an easy drive to an amazing getaway.  Here’s the current report from Bear Mountain:

There are lots of  beginner jumps and rails at chair 6, while chair 5 is lined with intermediate jumps, hips, jibs, the halfpipes, and a new wall ride. Over on chair 9 there are more intermediate features as well as lots of advanced and some expert features. Chair 9 has lots of skate style down bars, wall-rides, boxes, and tubes of all sorts. We are definitely enjoying the finest park set-up of the 2012-2013 season. Freestyle camp is a great way to comfortable improve with friendly and talented instructors. We are out of the cold front which allowed for some great snowmaking, and back into classic Southern California sun shine …

And here’s the report from Snow Summit:

Park Staff has also made a few new changes to Westridge, including two skill builder boxes and a mini bank halfpipe at the top of Chair 2. After hitting the new features, you have your choice of lapping Summit Run or continuing through the park, which has a new feature count of 32 jibs and 41 snow features! The snow coverage is excellent and we’re expecting sunny skies all weekend long. Be sure to make reservations if you’re headed up for the holiday to guarantee your spot on the snow.

Snow Summit and Bear Mountain limit the number of lift tickets sold each day to reduce crowding both on the slopes and the lifts.  Your tickets will work for either location, and there’ s a free shuttle bus that runs every half hour between the two.  They’ve made every provision to make sure you’re able to get in the maximum amount of skiing on your getaway.  Be sure to buy your lift tickets ahead of time to make sure they’re not sold out.  Here’s the link to their online store: https://ecommerce.snowsummit.com/e-commerce/

And of course, we strongly recommend you also be sure to reserve one of our luxury Big Bear cabins for your stay.  We have both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit cabins available, so you can get as close to the slopes as you wish.  We’re experts at helping families put together amazing Big Bear family vacations.  When you couple a great day of skiing with a relaxing stay at one of our luxury resort cabins, the only thing you’ll worry about is how you’re going to get the family to ever leave such fun and luxury.  But not to worry.  We’ll gladly help you book your return stay too!  You can view all our Big Bear cabin rentals at this link.

There’s also great skiing right now at Park City and Mammoth Mountain, so be sure to call us about booking a luxury vacation rental for these destinations as well.

Just give us a call at 310-780-3411, and we’ll be glad to help you book your dream vacation in one of our 5 Star vacation rentals.

Bear Mountain and Snow Summit

Planning a getaway for some skiing?  Great idea!  Big Bear has terrific skiing available at both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit.  The two slopes are operated in conjunction with each other, so you can ski to your heart’s content at one, and then take a quick trip over to the other.  They even offer a free shuttle service between the two.  All lift tickets work at both locations, so you can just concentrate on getting some serious skiing in.  Several of our properties are within walking distance of the slopes, so you can see how this will make for a perfect ski getaway.  Don’t worry about parking or traffic.  Walk to the slopes, use the free shuttle, and return to your luxury Five Star Vacation cabin rental at the end of the day.  At the end of that day, you  can relax on the plush sofa, close your eyes, and just listen to the crackling fire.  Life really doesn’t get much better than this.

Bear Mountain and Snow Summit limit the number of lift tickets they sell to avoid long wait times.  So be sure to make your plans early, and buy your lift tickets before you go.  Here’s the link to purchase online: http://www.bearmountain.com/snowboard/rates/lift-tickets/

Snow Fun Off the Slopes

While most people think of the great ski slopes when they head to Big Bear for snow play, there’s a lot more to do in the snow without skis.

Big Bear Snow Play is Southern California’s premier downhill inner tube destination.  They have a covered magic carpet lift that transports you to the top of the slope without wearing you out.  For one low entry price, they’ll supply the tube, and you’ll get unlimited runs down the hill.  This is a great choice for families with small children who want to play in the snow, but don’t want to strap skis on the little ones yet.  Visit their website for more details: http://www.bigbearsnowplay.com/

The Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain offers an entirely different sort of downhill fun. You kids will get wide-eyed when they realize that you’re taking them for a wild bobsled ride down a banked, twisty hillside track.  It looks and feels almost like the downhill runs in the Olympics, and there’s really nothing like it anywhere else in Southern California.  The runs are open year-round, so even if there’s no snow during your visit, the downhill bobsled runs will be open.  You can get more information on their website:  http://alpineslidebigbear.com/AlpineSlide.html

But the best part of your Big Bear getaway will surely be the relaxing time you spend in your  luxurious cabin offered by Five Star Vacation Rentals.  We’re convinced that our Big Bear cabins are the finest quality luxury homes you’ll be able to find.  And we’re always working behind the scenes to make sure the properties are all kept in top-notch condition.  We want to make sure that your next call to us will be to book another vacation.

View our Big Bear luxury cabin rentals on this page.  We also have luxury vacation rental homes available  in Park City,Palm Springs/La QuintaSouthern California BeachesMammoth Mountain, and Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.  Each of our vacation rentals is sure to provide your family a vacation you’ll remember fondly for years to come.  Call us at 310-800-5454, and we’ll help you book your next getaway.

Dreaming of a White Christmas? That’s One of Our Specialties

One of the great things about Southern California is the close proximity we have to so many diverse climates and activities.  We can travel east for a short time and quickly change from city living into the desert communities of Palm Springs and La Quinta.  We travel west and hit the amazing shoreline with beaches and fishing.  Just a short drive to the south, and we can enter Mexico, which we’re convinced offers the most authentic, um, Mexican food, on the planet.  And within just a couple hours drive of virtually anywhere in Los Angeles or Orange County, you can find yourself at some of the most popular theme parks and movie studios.  It’s really an amazing place, but perhaps even more so during the winter.

Big Bear skiing awaits

Winter brings a new element to Southern California that is found in very few places on earth.  Within a single day and just a couple hours drive you can go from wearing short sleeves and shorts, to skiing down a mountainside covered with fresh powder snow.  There’s really nothing quite like it anywhere else.  And for many Southern Californians, the opportunity to spend some time in the snow is something they really look forward to.  We understand.  We feel the same way.

The great thing about our Big Bear vacation rentals is the amazing amount of activities available for the family.  With the slopes at Bear Mountain and Snow Summit, there’s enough skiing to keep even the most avid skier smiling for many days.  But in addition to the skiing, Big Bear has some of the best shopping you’ll find anywhere.  Local arts and crafts can be found in many of the Village shops.  There is a huge variety of local restaurants and other activities as well.  Take a look at our Big Bear vacation rentals on this page, or call us at 310-780-3411 to book your getaway.

Our Mammoth Mountain condos are right on the slopes and offer some of the best skiing you’ll find anywhere in the world.  We offer ski-in/ski-out units, so that you can enjoy every last moment  your heart desires racing down the slopes.   Our units have shopping on-site and are the best home base possible for your next ski trip.  Click here to take a look at our vacation condos at Mammoth Mountain.

Mammoth has miles and miles of ski runs

We’re also pleased to offer a beautiful Park City condo right the base of Park City Mountain located next to the Three Kings, First Time, and Eagle chairlifts.  This luxury vacation rental has cathedral ceilings and a balcony overlooking the slopes.  So pack your skis and give us a call.  You’re certain to smile until your face hurts with this one.  Here’s the direct link to our Park City condo.

We’ve got so many great choices for your snow vacation, it may seem a bit overwhelming.  Please give us a call at 310-780-3411, and we’ll be glad to help you choose the best vacation rental for your winter getaway.

December Events in Big Bear

December is one of the most magical months to visit Big Bear.  Most years we’ve had snow on and off for a few weeks, and the holidays are right around the corner.  We recommend you book your December getaway early to make sure you get the right cabin.  Here are a few things to look forward to during your Big Bear stay in one of our vacation rental cabins:

Skiing.  Lots of Sking

December usually has good skiing conditions at Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. We’re often busiest on the weekends, so there can be shorter lift waits during the week.  We may also have a wider selection of cabins available during the week as well.  Give us a call a 310-780-3411 and we’ll help you pick out the best cabin for your getaway. There’s really nothing like having fun all day on the slopes and then have the pleasure arriving back at your luxurious cabin to relax and prepare to do it all again the next day.

Gather Your Little Animal Lovers

The Big Bear Alpine Zoo has some great events planned for December.  At noon each day one of the zoo keepers will bring out one of the animals to allow a closer look and provide more details.  It could be an owl, a raccoon, or even an eagle.  Then later at 3pm, you’ll have a chance to follow one of the zookeepers as they make their rounds feeding the animals.  It’s a great time to learn more about many of the animals and get a behind-the-scenes view of running the zoo.  There’s no extra charge for these activities, so you may want to head over at noon and stay past 3pm.  The zoo is centrally located to much of Big Bear.  Here’s a map to the zoo.

Free Nature Walks at the Big Bear Discovery Center

This is another great family outing.  The Discovery center hosts 30 minute walks each weekend that describe some of the plants, animals, and history of Big Bear.  The walks are great for families with kids of all ages.  The walks are not strenuous, so even the little ones can have a grand time exploring some forest trails.  For specific times and location, visit the Discovery Center’s website at www.bigbeardiscoverycenter.com, or give them a call at (909) 382-2790.

Enjoy a Night Out With “Oliver”

Big Bear’s community theater group has its holiday performances of “Oliver” playing the end of November through December 1st and 2nd. This is a real crowd-pleaser, and one that is designed to keep the entire family entertained.  Visit their website at http://BigBearTheater.org, or call the box office at (909) 866-4970.  If your kids have never had the fun of enjoying live theater, this can be an amazing treat performed by a group of local artists.

Isn't it time to introduce your kids to Frosty?

A White Christmas for Your Family

Many of us in Southern California hardly ever see snow other than on TV.  But there is a real joy to be found in gathering with family and friends in the snowy mountains of Big Bear.  Even if you don’t plan on skiing, a Christmas in Big Bear may well be one that creates a lifetime of great memories for your family.  And if you book early enough, you may be able to get one of our larger cabins that will have room for up to 16 family members.   City kids will delight at being able to run outside and build their first snowman.  If their feet and noses start getting too cold, they can run back in and get warmed up in front of the fireplace.  When their friends ask them about their Christmas vacation, they’ll have lots of great memories to tell.

Call us at 310-780-3411 to book your December getaway.  Winter is always our busiest time, so we encourage you to make your plans early for the best selection among our luxury cabins. Browse all of our Big Bear cabins on this page.  If you’re looking for a getaway someplace else, please be sure to look at our luxury rentals in  Park City,Palm Springs/La Quinta Southern California Beaches Mammoth Mountain, and  Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.  Regardless of where you may go, you’ll have the confidence of knowing that Five Star Vacation Rentals is working to make your vacation relaxing and memorable.  We know that your vacation time is very special.

Be sure to check back next week.  We’ll have more things to do during your December getaway to Big Bear.

Planning Your Big Bear Ski Getaway With Five Star Vacation Rentals

Well, the kids and their crazy costumes have come and gone.  The seasonal changing of our clocks is just a couple days away, and it’s time for serious skiers to get about planning their first big ski getaway for the season.  And we’re here to help you choose the best vacation rental for your getaway.

Planning a Big Bear Ski Getaway

It's time to teach the kids to ski!

Big Bear is certainly our most popular winter getaway. People travel from all over the world to enjoy the amazing slopes each winter. And the community of Big Bear is one of the most desirable for the time you’ll spend off the slopes as well.

When you’re hitting the slopes, you’ll find downhill runs catered for all skill levels. It’s a great opportunity for a family outing to spend time with your kids teaching them a hobby they’ll enjoy for the rest of their lives. Years from now, you’ll probably smile when your kids tell the story of the first time mom or dad took them skiing. For a parent, there are few memories more joyous than the excited giggles of your children tumbling in the snow as they try out skis for the first time. And no matter how cold and wet you may get, you can retreat to the warm luxury of your Five Star Vacation Rental just a few minutes away from the slopes. Cold toes and frozen noses will soon evaporate into the warmth of a roaring fire or a steaming hot tub. Early the next day the kids will likely wake you up by bouncing on your bed, begging for you to rush them back to the slopes again. These are the moments that make parenting worthwhile.

We suggest choosing one of two approaches for your ski getaway.  If your vacation time is not flexible, call us today and we’ll work with you to find the best cabin for the size of your group and whatever amenities you’d prefer on the specific dates you wish.  If you have some flexibility and can getaway at the last moment, give us a call when you’re ready.  We’ll find whatever last-minute vacation rental cabins may be available for your stay.  Either way, we’ll work with you to get a great cabin at a great rate.

The ride up is almost as much fun as the ride down.

Snow Summit usually opens sometime during November.  The first runs last year started on about the 10th of November.  Watch the weather reports, and be sure to call us as soon as you get your dates.  Our cabins fill up fast once the skiing begins.   As the season progresses, we’ll be sure to blog details about all the winter fun available in Big Bear beyond the slopes.  Many of our winter guests in Big Bear have a wonderful time without ever putting on a pair of skis.

And don’t forget that we have amazing luxury rentals available in several more locations as well.  If you’re planning your winter getaway somewhere other than Big Bear, we can help as well in the following areas:  Park City, Utah, Palm Springs/La Quinta Southern California Beaches Mammoth Mountain, and  Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. At Five Star Vacation Rentals we realize that your time away on vacation is important, and we treat it that way. We are constantly working to ensure that your stay in one of our luxury rentals is an experience you’ll always remember fondly and want to repeat often.

Call us today at 310-780-3411 to book your next getaway.

Our Newest Big Bear Luxury Cabin Rental Is Just Steps Away From Bear Mountain Skiing

We just posted Lassen’s Lodge, our newest Big Bear luxury cabin, and wanted our faithful blog followers to get all the details.  This one is so new we haven’t had time to get the professional photography done yet.  But you don’t need Ansel Adams to understand why we’re so excited about the newest member of our Five Star Vacation Rentals family.  Take a look at the best part of this beauty:

That's Bear Mountain in the front yard

This is a view looking out from the front of the house.  As you can see, the road is the only thing that stands between you and the Bear Mountain slopes. If you got any closer, you’d have to build an igloo.  With this amazing cabin you can literally roll out of bed, strap on your skis, and hit the slopes. Well, maybe you should get dressed and eat breakfast first, but you get the idea.  We’re anticipating that this one will be booked solid for the entire ski season, so we’re encouraging all our die-hard skiers to grab open slots while they’re available.   We’re prepared to secure your ski vacation for anytime through next spring, so be sure to work out your plans and call us right away.

In addition to the great location, we’ve made sure the cabin will meet the level of comfort and luxury you expect from a Five Star Vacation Rental in Big Bear.  The cabin has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and enough beds to sleep 12 with a maximum occupancy of 14.  The living room has custom furniture with a rock carved fireplace.  You may end up fighting over who gets to prepare dinner with the fully equipped kitchen that features beautiful granite countertops.  And don’t worry about the kids.  You can be sure they’ll be kept plenty busy with all the games we’ve packed in.  It’s an impressive list:  We have a Foosball table, a pinball machine, chess table, and plenty of other board games.

Relax in front of the fireplace
Relax in front of the fireplace

This Big Bear vacation rental is a perfect destination for all our sports fans too.  You’ll surely want to take a break from the slopes to watch the game on the huge 60 inch plasma TV with its surround sound system.   You’ll love the large dining room table for setting up snacks and pizza boxes to fuel your enjoyment of the game.

There’s also a gas barbecue on the deck and a hot tub with room for 6.  Just imagine that amazing moment when you’re up to your neck in the warm water of the hot tub, and the air is filled with the sweet aroma of the steaks on the barbecue. It’s making our mouths water just thinking about it.  After the first day, it will seem like it’s been months since you were in the city rushing off to work or spending all day on your cell phone.

And once the quiet of the evening comes and the kids are finally drifting off to sleep, you can retire to the wonderful master suite.  It has a king size bed and is a great retreat for mom and dad.  It has a fireplace and a plasma TV, so you can enjoy some time alone.   We’re certain that the only regret you’ll have about your stay at Lassen’s Lodge is that you didn’t stay longer.

We’re accepting reservations immediately, so give us a call at 310-780-3411.  You can view more photos and pricing on this page. We also have Five Star Vacation Rentals available in Park City,Palm Springs/La QuintaSouthern California BeachesMammoth Mountain, and Villa la Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.  Each of our destinations offers a wealth of activities for your entire family.
