March Events in Big Bear

We’ve got great snow conditions as we write this, but we all know ski season will eventually end. So to our ski enthusiasts, we encourage you to book your getaway without delay. For those of you willing to wait until March (when snow may still be good, but…) here are some of the great activities you can incorporate in your getaway to a Five Star Vacation Rental in Big Bear.

Polar Bear PlungeOnce a year Big Bear attracts those brave souls who actually arrive with the intent to immerse themselves into the frigid winter waters of Big Bear Lake. While we’re definitely more inclined to dive into a glass of red wine next to a comfy fireplace during these cold days, this annual activity helps support a great cause. The 8th Annual Big Bear Lake “Polar Plunge” for Special Olympics takes place on Saturday, March 2nd. This is a great cause and a lot of fun. And best of all, you can be a sponsor, and never even get near the water. Check out the ways to participate at their website: http://www.sosc.org/bigbearplunge
That same weekend of March 2-3, give your Scout the opportunity to test their knowledge and on-hill skills while earning a Snow Sports Merit Badge at Bear Mountain’s annual Scout Weekend. BSA Merit Badge counselors will be on hand to evaluate Scouts and help them work towards Merit Badges. To participate, Scouts must bring their Snow Sports Merit Badge workbook and Blue Cards. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are welcome. All scouts participating on Scout Weekend will receive a Bear Mountain Scout Weekend Patch 2019. For more information call 909.866.5766 ext 136 or email bearmountaingroups@bbmr.com.

Supergirl ProOn March 8-10th, you’ll want to attend the Supergirl Snow Pro at Bear Mountain. This is a top-level Boardercross (SBX) and Half-pipe competition with the world’s top female pros and a slew of up-and-coming amateur talent. The event is designed to not only showcase the best female snowboarders on the planet, but also to also serve as a developmental contest to help locate, nurture, mentor and encourage the next generation of aspiring snowboarding pros. Free to watch. For info on participating, visit their website at https://supergirlsnowpro.com

Enjoy March in Big Bear

March in Big BearAre you ready to take the plunge and enjoy March in Big Bear? We’re talking about an actual plunge. Big Bear’s annual Polar Plunge is scheduled for March 3rd, and it’s a great time for you to demonstrate your bravery for all to see. Yes, you can have some fun, freeze your, um, fajitas, and support Inland Empire Special Olympics at the same time. For those of you sane enough to actually refuse to enter the frigid waters of Big Bear Lake, there’s plenty of fun stuff and ways to support the cause without ever entering the water. Count us in as part of the latter.  The Plunge takes place at Veteran’s Park, 40870 Big Bear Blvd. Registration starts at 10am.

If you want to avoid the crowds on the morning of the Polar Plunge, The Cave is also hosting a pre-registration party the night before on March 2nd. It will feature live music and a meet-and-greet with local Special Olympics athletes.  The Cave is located at 40789 Village Drive, and the fun starts at 6pm.

Snowboarder in halfpipeIf you’re sad that the Winter Olympics are ending, there’s still some great half pipe action to enjoy. On March 4th the United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association is hosting their half pipe competition at Bear Mountain. This is the training ground for future Olympians, and a great chance to see some of the most talented half pipe skiers around. The event starts at 10am at Bear Mountain. Registration starts at 8:30am and the event begins at 9:30am. Visit their website at this link for more details.

The Bald Eagle Celebration continues on March 10th with volunteer spotters helping provide the annual count followed by an informative presentation on these majestic birds and their long history in the Big Bear region. Those wanting to participate in the count should arrive at the Big Bear Discovery Center at 8am. The bald eagle presentation takes place at 10am. Contact the Big Bear Discovery Center for more details.
